1100-1300 AD. Byzantine. Magnificent gold earrings each with a circular hoop ornamented with a pearl; a trailing chain and gem-studded cross hang from each of the hoops. The Cross is the principal symbol of Christianity, recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of his Passion and death. The cross is thus a sign both of Christ himself and of the faith of Christians. Byzantium was justly famous for the elegance of its jewellery, whether in precious metals for the aristocracy, or in bronze for people further down the social ladder. These gorgeous earrings probably adorned the ears of a Byzantine noblewoman. Excellent condition; wearable.Size: L:set of 2:79mm / W:22mm ; 12.9g; Provenance: Obtained on the London art market in the early 2000s; formerly from the collection of an English Family, by descents form the 1970s.
