C. 600-700 AD. Merovingian. Magnificent gold ring with ribbed, D-shaped hoop with baubles on the shoulders and projecting, cross-shaped bezel with rounded garnet and square emerald settings. The Cross is the principal symbol of Christianity, recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of his Passion and death. The Cross is thus a sign both of Christ himself and of the faith of Christians. The Merovingian dynasty ruled the Franks, who occupied much of modern France and western German from the 5th century until the mid 8th. Merovingian material culture is particularly known for its rich metalwork tradition, including jewellery and weapons. The combination of elaborate goldwork with richly coloured gemstones in this piece create an eye-catching statement item, suitable for a Merovingian noblewoman. Excellent condition; wearable. All samples correspond to the metal content of the period specified; no modern trace elements were detected in the patina; expertly cleaned and conserved.Size: D: 19.31mm / US: 9 3/8 / UK: S 1/2; 8.11g; Provenance: Property of an established London gallery; acquired from a private estate collection formed in the 1970s.
