To me Ray was a woodturning “god” whose grasp on perfection was unrivalled. His reputation as an extremely accomplished turner and a purist was well known, yet what I recall most was his sense of humour and his encouraging words to me. It was daunting to collaborate with such perfection - even Ray’s blank showed great form - so I leaned heavily on those encouraging words and humour in deciding how I might tackle this project. I imagined him saying “Sure, go ahead and cut it in half”. The resulting piece would have been for Ray a new form and because of Ray’s influence it is also a new variation for me, one which I may further explore.
