Ca. 200-300 AD An aubergine coloured glass unguentarium with a roughly spherical body, a flat base, a stout cylindrical neck, and a wide flaring rim. The body is decorated with protruding pinched ribs.Roman glass expanded upon Hellenistic techniques with the arrival of glass blowing in the 1st century, popularising the material and allowing the manufacture of vessels that looked ethereal, then and now, with swirling colours that catch the light magnificently. For a similar unguentarium, see:https://ancientglass.wordpress.com/2017/03/22/9941/ Size: L: 145mm / W: 75mm; 580g Provenance: Property of a London gentleman, formerly with the Parthenon gallery, previously in an old English collection formed in the 1980s.
