A group of four Chinese blue and white export dishes dating from the 16th century. The group includes: a small dish with a lotus surrounded by Buddhist emblems on the interior and dots on the exterior, a small dish with scholar's items and Buddhist emblems on the interior and dots on the exterior, a plate with a phoenix in a landscape on the interior, and a bowl with three birds in a landscape framed by ruyi and flowers on the interior and ruyi and Buddhist emblems on the exterior. Dimensions are: the bowl measures 2 1/4 inches tall X 8 1/2 inches wide, 5.7 cm X 21.6 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: The first dish has rim chipping and iron pitting. The second dish has rim chipping. The plate is in overall good condition with abrasions. The bowl has firing defects to the bottom and minor rim chips. Provenance: From the estate of a surgeon in the Washington, D.C. area. The items were acquired from various auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's prior to the 1990s.
