Description

600-200 BC. Apulia. Daunian pelike in a cream fabric with out-turned rim, neck flaring neck, piriform body and flattened base; two strap handles attach at the rim and the shoulder. Painted linear bands of black decoration appear on one side; red decoration on the other. The Greek term pelike (pl. pelikai) was used for a number of shapes, and we do not know what this one-piece vessel with a distinctive sagging belly was called in antiquity, though it was adopted by numerous societies around the Mediterranean. Scenes in Greek art shows that the shape was used as a container for liquids. Size: L:300mm / W:230mm ; 2.5kg; Provenance: From the private collection of a Kent gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK /European art markets.
