C. 100-300 AD. Roman. Gold ring comprising D-shaped hoop and elliptical bezel with a black gem setting. The setting bears an engraved gryllos motif, comprising a youthful soldier wearing a plumed helmet and looking left, and a bearded, man in the nape of his neck. The gryllos (from the Greek for a caricature) is elusive figure in Roman mythology, who is often depicted as a conjoined old and young man, as in this example, and is commonly associated with the occult.
