C. 1000 AD. Medieval Saxon period. Bronze cross with four equal-length arms with ribbed decoration. The centre of the cross and each of the ends of the arms feature concentric rondels. A rounded suspension loop projects from the top. The reverse is undecorated. The Cross is the principal symbol of Christianity, recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of his Passion and death. The cross is thus a sign both of Christ himself and of the faith of Christians. This item reflects the enduring value of the cross as an enduring symbol of faith through the ages.
