712-30 BC, Late Period/Ptolemaic. A beautiful restrung necklace comprising multi-coloured discoid and tubular faience beads as well as a blue faience Djed-pillar amulet pierced transversely for suspension. According to legend, Osiris, the king of the Egyptian pantheon, was killed and dismembered by his brother, Seth, the god of chaos. His consort, Isis, and son, Horus, gathered Osiris’ body and revived the god so that he could serve as the god of the netherworld. The djed-pillar was designed as a symbol of Osiris and later came to be understood as a representation of his backbone. When worn this amulet would invoke the regenerative powers of Osiris. Good condition. Size: L:236mm / W:mm ; 4.6g; Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1980-90s on the UK and European art market.
