The intaglio features a hand pinching an ear, surrounding by a Greek formula requesting that the wearer does not forget. In Roman art and literature, the ear-tweaking hand is a common motif, signifying a request for attention. Gems like this one were mementos of love and were probably given to lovers as gifts.
