1100-1300 AD. Medieval. Silver ring with circular hoop and rounded plate bezel bearing an incised scene of a man and a woman standing below a tree, who represent Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve are central to the creation stories of the Abrahamic religions. Adam, the first man, and his wife, Eve, created from his rib, lib in the paradisical Garden of Eden, where they are told that they can eat freely of all the trees in the garden, except for a tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve is subsequently tricked into eating from the forbidden tree by the Devil in the guise of a serpent, precipitating the primordial couple’s expulsion from Eden. This ring would probably have belonged to a faithful Christian individual living during the Middle Ages, when the story was particularly important and popular. Excellent condition; wearable.Size: D: 16.51mm / US: 6 / UK: M; 4.26g; Provenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1990s.
