Molly Winton (USA) canarywood decorated bowl 8x14cm. SignedIt was a great honor to be invited to participate in the Ray Key Collaboration Project. I had been introduced to Ray briefly during our mutual participation in a symposium, however never had the opportunity to get to know him personally. Some years ago a friend relayed a comment she heard when someone asked Ray who he thought were artists to watch as they were emerging within the woodturned artist community. Apparently he mentioned me, and my work. When I heard this it took me by surprise, because I had no idea I was even on his radar, or he was familiar with the work I was producing. It was quite flattering, to say the least.When I had the opportunity to review the roughed out pieces of Ray’s from which to choose, I immediately saw the piece I wanted. My favorite wood to turn in black cherry, because it machines beautifully, and takes a crisp, clean burn. Looking at the piece upon arrival, I wanted to ensure I kept the intended form. It lent itself well to a sloped and curved rim where I would be able to place my mustangs. I finished turned the form, and placed a bead inside the rim to delineate the area to be embellished. From there it was just a matter of drawing, and burning the mustang design.Having the opportunity to participate in this project was a joy not only because of the great honor to work with a piece begun by Ray, but also because it has started me back to turning and embellishing wood. Health reasons required me to stop turning and burning for about two years. My shop environment recently changed, and I acquired an excellent respiratory/filtration system which now allows me to work occasionally. Prior to the invitation, I had yet to create a piece that would bring me back to an exhibit or gallery. This piece provided that opportunity. I am truly grateful.The Ray Key Collaboration Auction
