Ca. 500 AD. A striking glass rhyton, a vessel that served as a drinking cup and was esteemed for its unique form. The rhyton is composed of a cone-shaped cup with a distinctive elongated, ribbed handle that terminates in a knob finial stylised as the head of a bird(?). This stylised head is adorned with applied blue dots for eyes, short beak, and lateral handles with suspended rings. The collar of the cup is accentuated with flounced trails, and the mid-section of the cup features an applied glass strain with pale green dots, which adds an additional layer of visual interest to the design. The production of glass vessels during the Sasanian period reflected the technological and artistic advancements of the time, as well as the cultural and economic exchange that occurred between the various regions under Sasanian influence.Size: L:180mm / W:125mm ; 240gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
