Description

Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten, Still Life with an Altar Vase, Clay Vase, Globe, Pocket Watch, Flow Oil on canvas (relined). 67 x 53 cm. Provenance Koetser Gallery, London, 1966. - Where acquired by the present owner. A peculiar stillness reigns over the objects arranged on a table in this work. Rendered with sober clarity, we see flowers in a silver altar vase, a globe, a clay pot, a laurel branch, and a pocket watch. It is precisely in the sobriety of this depiction that the skill of Jacob van Roestratens, a Haarlem artist who studied under Frans Hals (his father-in-law), becomes apparent. As in other still lifes (fig. 1) by the artist, Roestratens places a bright, precious object at the centre of the composition. Here it is a silver altar vase whose foliate ornaments contrast with the geometric forms of the globe and the delicate colour of the flowers. The rose with its wilted petals, the upturned clay pot, the open pocket watch, deliberately placed in front of the laurel branch and the globe - all these objects remind us of the transience of beauty, glory and power and combine to form a contemplative vanitas still life. Pieter van Roestraten, Stillleben mit silberner Ingwerdose, Slg. Hinrich Bischoff, Lempertz-Auktion / Still life with a Silver Ginger Jar, The Hinrich Bischoff Collection, Lempertz Sale, 6.12.2020, lot 18. Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten, Stillleben mit Altarvase, Tonvase, Globus, Taschenuhr, Blumen und L Öl auf Leinwand (doubliert). 67 x 53 cm. Provenienz Koetser Gallery, London 1966.
