The Rotterdam based genre, portrait and landscape painter Ludolf de Jongh specialised, among other things, in depictions of hunting. This landscape is a typical example of his works. Hunters and their horses are shown resting at a watering place under a large tree. The composition opens up onto a flat, panoramic landscape on the left. The mood is calm and contemplative. The two dogs in the foreground are a frequently recurring motif, presented here with Dutch humour. Based on the costumes, the depiction can be dated to the early 1650s. In this decade, de Jongh created several paintings with similar compositions, such as a "Landscape with a Hunting Party at Rest" (see Karl&Faber, Munich, 19.05.2017, lot 8). In both hunting paintings, the landscape may have been created by Joris van Hagen, with whom de Jongh is thought to have collaborated since the 1650s. The painting is registered in the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), The Hague, under no. 284060 as the artist`s own work. Der Rotterdamer Genre-, Portrait- und Landschaftsmaler Ludolf de Jongh spezialisierte sich unter anderem auf Jagddarstellungen. Vorliegende Landschaft ist ein typisches Beispiel seiner Kunst. Unter einem großen Baum rasten Jäger und ihre Pferde an einer Tränke. Die Komposition öffnet sich links zu einer weiten flachen Landschaft. Die Stimmung ist ruhig und kontemplativ. Die beiden Hunde im Vordergrund sind ein häufig wiederkehrendes Motiv, das an dieser Stelle mit niederländischem Witz präsentiert wird. Aufgrund der Kostüme kann die Darstellung in die frühen 1650er Jahre datiert werden. In dieser Dekade schuf de Jongh mehrere kompositorisch vergleichbares Gemälde, etwa eine „Landschaft mit rastender Jagdgesellschaft“ (Auktion Karl&Faber, München, 19.05.2017, Lot 8). Bei beiden Jagdgemälden hat möglichweise Joris van Hagen die Landschaft geschaffen, mit dem de Jongh vermutlich seit den 1650er Jahren zusammenarbeitete. Das Gemälde ist im RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), Den Haag, unter der Nr. 284060 als eigenhändiges Werk des Künstlers registriert.
