Ca. 1st Century AD A beautiful ceramic lamp depicting a pegasus - winged horse. The central image is framed by a concentric circles design. A central fill hole and a wide spout adorned with pair of volutes.Pegaus, fathered by Poseidon, sprang out of his mother, the Gorgon Medusa, when the Greek hero Perseus cut off her head. Pegasus was tamed by the hero Bellerophon, who flew on the horse to kill the monstrous Chimera.Lamps with rounded nozzle, volutes and without handles like this one are dated to the 1st century AD ? cf. Walters, H. B. (1914). Catalogue of the Greek and Roman Lamps in the British Museum. London, pp. 95?112.
