This bronze medal honors the principle donor for the purchase of Fraunces Tavern in New York City. Possibly the oldest building still standing in NYC, it was here in December 1783, that Washington said goodbye to his officers. It was going to be demolished @1900 but several patriotic organizations saved it led by the Sons of the Revolution who purchased it in 1904. Medal has Tallmadge (grandson of Benjamin Tallmadge, one of Washington's spy masters) on the obverse with PRESIDENT/NEW YORK SOCIETY/ SONS OF THE/REVOLUTION 1884-1904 on the left and on the right has THE PURCHASE/OF FRAUNCES TAVERN/HIS LAST OFFICIAL ACT____ HIS WILL GENEROUSLY PROVIDED SUNS FOR PAYMENT. The reverse has the tavern with wording around the rim "HERE WASHINGTON BADE FAREWELL TO HIS OFFICERS 4 DECEMBER 1783. Above the tavern reads THE SONS OF THE REVOLUTION ORGANIZED 4 DECEMBER 1883 Smedley #66, Obtained 6/79, Johnson & Jensen Lot 352 envelope included.
