BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, top third with an alphabet row above a six-row verse flanked by flowers in handled urns, center motifs featuring birds, eight-point stars, flowers, and a flower basket, lower third depicting a landscape with four trees and a large recumbent stag, signed "SARAH A[L?]ECE CHRISTAIN OCT 4 1799" along bottom edge, all encompassed by a scrolling flowering-vine border. Housed under glass in a wood frame. Dated 1799. 12 1/8" x 12 1/8" sight, 13 5/8" x 13 5/8" OA. Good to very good visual condition with toning and scattered holes to linen, light fading and fugitive color to some thread, some losses to thread in verse, frame with some wear, a crack along left side, and other imperfections.
