释广元大师俗名宋元如,别署竹云斋,1928年出生于河南沈邱（原属安徽界首），幼承父瑞宇公厩书法。一九四八年渡台为僧，经禅之暇，习染翰墨，师事马寿华乡长学画竹。大师书工各体，画精竹石。历任佛教研究所教授、世界华僧会副会长、国际美展评审、中国书法学会理事长。
