STANDING JAIN BUDDHA Sandstone India 12th century Dimensions: Height 75 cm ; Wide 35 cm ; Depth 15 cm Weight: 35.576 grams Standing Buddha in a gateway attached to a rectangular plinth. The base of the gateway has floral decorations in the front and the Buddha is standing on a slightly elevated lotus-shaped base. To the sides of his feet we see two attendants sitting in lotus pose with four arms holding attributes. The Buddha himself is standing without clothes underneath a three-layered canopy. Behind the body of a serpent visible and above Buddha's head the seven-headed serpent forms a protective shield. Typical marks of Jain sculpture are long arms reaching almost to the knees, long and delicate limbs. The expression is calm and friendly in a meditative state.
