提要：是书为陈庆年在两湖书院任职期间撰写，并亲自讲授此门课程。全书通论古今中外兵学、春秋诸国兵争、战国时期重要战例，引古证今，提倡强兵重战，以御外侮。简明扼要，便于掌握。首刊有“光绪二十五年两湖书院正学堂课程本”牌记。两湖书院，光绪十六年（1890）张之洞于武昌创建，为晚清时期湖北省的最高学府。因经费主要出自湘、鄂两省茶商捐资，故名“两湖书院”。辛亥革命领袖黄兴即毕业于此。此书初刻初印，流传较罕。
