Syria, Ca. 1300-1400 AD. A striking blue and black glazed fritware bowl featuring a shallow body and a flat rim. The bowl sits on a low, unglazed ring foot. The interior of the basin is a veritable feast for the eyes, with a kaleidoscopic design emanating from a central hexagonal motif and developing into a mesmerizing blend of black and blue patterns. A register of white and black checkered pattern adorns the cavetto, adding further complexity to the composition. The rim, meanwhile, features black painted half-roundels set against a lustrous blue background, evoking a sense of elegance and sophistication. Mamluk bowls decorated in this style were typically produced in small quantities, with each piece being meticulously crafted by skilled artisans who employed a range of techniques, including slip-trailing, carving, and glazing. The use of blue and black glazes in Mamluk pottery was particularly significant, as these colors were associated with the ruling class and were considered highly prestigious.Size: L:50mm / W:220mm ; 530gProvenance: Acquired from M.A; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
