(Framed)Estimate: 300 – 400 euroNOTEAlbert Jurardus of Prooijen was born as the son of Johannes van Prooijen and Ebeldina Jacoba Smit. He was named after his grandfather, Albert Jurardusz Oltman, alias Smit (1770 - 1824). He was still young, when he started studying at the Drawing Academy (Minerva) in the city of Groningen. He studied there from 1847 to 1855 and was appointed teacher there (1864 - 1865). In 1853 he won the important Royal Medal for his work. Starting 1869, he lived and worked mainly in Amsterdam. Albert van Prooijen is best known for his Dutch landscapes with cattle, a popular genre in the 19th Century. In addition to landscapes, he initially painted marine and town scenes: between 1860 and 1868, mainly in his Dutch native town of Groningen, after that in Deventer, Zutphen, Vorden and Vaassen. His favorite subjects, however, were meadows with grazing cows. In his early work the strong influence of Romanticism is evident, after 1870 he painted with a somewhat rougher key.
