The picture shows an interior with a mother sitting next to a table and looking at a portrait miniature of her late husband after she received a dead letter. She comforts her daughter who is holding her knees. Attributes on the table (Chinese vase) and the little boat below on the ground tell us that her late husband was a sailor to the far East.
