Gay Patterson (American, 1948-2019). "Overture" oil on gesso linen panel, n.d. Hand signed on the lower right. Santa Fe artist Gay Patterson brought lush, flowering foliage right up to the picture plane in this stunning painting. Voluminous blossoms of fuchsia, petal pink, and lavender hues amidst clusters of leaves delineated in greens ranging from lime to emerald glimmer in daylight. Patterson's painting invites the viewer to witness the breathtaking beauty of springtime. A mesmerizing, large-scale composition skillfully rendered in oil on gesso on a linen covered panel by a remarkable artist. Size: 36" L x 48" W (91.4 cm x 121.9 cm) Size of frame: 37.625" L x 49.625" W (95.6 cm x 126 cm)Gay Patterson passed away on June 12, 2019 from complications related to a squamous cell carcinoma. Her artist's statement provides precious insight to her work. The following is a poignant excerpt: "Over decades, I seem to have embedded notions of ephemerality, motion and the constant of change in my work. I'm not sure if I'm trying to understand mutability, nail it down or accept it, but it is a primal state of life, and so very beautiful. What you see, feel and think depends on just how you approach everything, including art. In looking at a painting, no part exists in isolation but alters in relationship to what it is next to, where it is viewed from, what the quality of light is and every experience you bring along."
