Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Watercolor, n.d. Hand signed in pencil at lower right. An outstanding watercolor by Jon Zahourek depicting a nude man. Zahourek has captured the man in motion, with outstretched arms and a twisting torso. The form is sketched in pencil and embellished with a vibrant palette of sunny yellow, sea green, cerulean blue, and tangerine hues. Furthermore, Zahourek's passion for anatomy and his artistic process is strongly conveyed in this painting. Zahourek himself has described his creative method as somewhat organic and dissociative. In his words, "Paintings and drawings and sculpture were all a surprise. The kinesthetic mind was doing the artwork, not the conscious mind." Size of artwork: 9.7" L x 7.75" W (24.6 cm x 19.7 cm) Size of Lucite frame: 10.2" L x 8.2" W (25.9 cm x 20.8 cm)In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
