此砚为沈增植所用之物，极其难得。沈增植（1850－1922），一作曾植，字子培，号乙盫，晚号寐叟，浙江嘉兴人。光绪进士，官安徽提学使。其书学包世臣、吴熙载一派，晚年取法黄道周、倪元璐并上溯钟繇、索靖，于“二爨”颇有心得，终将篆籀、汉分、北碑、竹简、晋唐等各代书体和书风意思熔于行草书为一炉。 此砚台器形古雅，形制简朴，呈长方形，砚池略凹下，颜色深沉，石质极为细腻光滑，抚之冰清若玉，娇嫩如肌，古意盎然。
