LUC PEIRE (Bruges, Belgium, 1916- Paris, 1994)."Composition".Silkscreen on paper, copy 53/100.Signed and numbered in pencil.Size: 70 x 50,5 cm; 71 x 51,5 cm (frame).Artist trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges and at St Luc, Ghent. He collaborated with Constant Permeke (1886-1952), considered as the greatest representative of Flemish expressionism and, thanks to him, he would become part of the Young Belgian Painting movement.Peire's beginnings were completely expressionist compositions that would become stylised human figures depicted from a more spiritual viewpoint. He used this language until 1953, when he met Josep Mª Subirachs and began to investigate the line and the use of primary colours in convergence with a geometry of rigorous harmony. He began to consider verticality as essential to human existence, once saying: "Man lives standing up. For me verticality is life (...) my quest is space, space, non-limitation (...) to reach the infinite vertical". Since then, his compositions have been characterised by vertical or horizontal rectangular spaces, where the line is the fundamental element of the plane. His works are representations of rhythm within space and time.
