A Black Stone Stele of Buddha. Northeastern India, Pala period, 9th/10th century Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base, beaneth the pipal tree, holding a cup in his hands and clad in a diaphanous sanghati, the face serene with heavy-lidded downcast eyes centered by a raised urna, the hair in loose curls over the ushnisha, backed by a nimbus and torana supporting two stupas, and flanked by two attendants.
