Portrait of the Shahzadi Jahanara Begum Sahib Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, 19th century Opaque watercolour heightened with gold on paper. Shahzadi (Princess) Jahanara Begum was the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. The name Jahanara that was given to her by her Emperor grandfather Jahangir means ‘Adorner of the world’. Jahanara was the favorite daughter of Shah Jahan. She was a constant companion to her mother Empress Mumtaz Mahal. At the age of only seventeen after the death of Mumtaz Mahal she became the first lady of Mughal Empire. She brought her father out of mourning and restored normalcy to a court darkened by her mother’s death and her father’s grief.Measurement: 28 x 36 cm.
