Watten (1926-1991) founder and director of the Taipei Art Guild (1968-1974), thereafter by descent to the current ownerOriginally from Fujian, Chen Ting-shih came to Taiwan after World War II. Having lost his ability to hear and speak due to an accident in childhood, the artist embraced the visual language of art. One of the early members of the Fifth Moon Group in Taiwan in the late 1950's, Chen Ting-shih developed a unique style of abstract art that relied on simple geometric shapes, and strong, vivid colors. Using locally produced sugarcane fiber boards as carving blocks, these prints rely on lustrous colors and glossy black ink. The result is distinctive in their monumentality, with a cosmic, primordial demeanor. His prints were included in the groundbreaking traveling exhibition New Directions in Chinese Painting, organized by Professor Chu-tsing Li in 1970.
