Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, March 2000-Feburary 2003A vociferous advocate for sweeping changes to the Imperial government of the Qing dynasty, Kang Youwei was also a student of early calligraphy, publishing Guang yizhou shuangji (Extended Paired Oars for the Boat of Art) in 1889. The popularity of this treatise was so great it was reprinted 18 times in the decade to follow. The treatise promoted beixue--the study of bold, stele-style inscriptions--mainly from the Six Dynasties (3rd -6th century) period.
