C. attended evening classes at a painting school in Barcelona as a young man and worked as an illustrator and poster artist from 1932. As a result of the Spanish Civil War, C. settled in Paris in 1939. In 1944 he met Picasso there. 1946-52 he created stage pictures for many theaters in Europe and North America.
