Oil on canvas Housed in its original gesso decorated frame that is damaged Unsigned SIZE: 24″ x 20″. Overall: 31-1/2″ x 27-1/2″ PROVENANCE: Descended within the family as follows: Elizabeth Arden, New York, to her niece Patricia Graham Young, to Charlie Young, to our consignor. Family history indicates that Elizabeth Arden sat for a first portrait which she did not like. She insisted and had a second sitting which produced the painting we have which she liked as she felt the artist had got the measure of her and she looked much steelier and tougher than in the first sitting. Ms. Arden kept the second sitting example and hung it in her Fifth Avenue apartment. She sent the first sitting portrait to London where it hung in her management offices. We are not sure whether the larger portrait sold at Christies London 03/23/2017 was from the corporate office. CONDITION: Recently restored with inpainting, lined, very good. 51921-1 (4,000-5,000)
