It was the very first exponent of the Submariner family produced by Rolex with protective crown guards. The design of this new feature was subjected to different changes in the years: the first examples featured square, hard-edged crown guards which lasted for a short production run. They were followed by the pointed guards for a few years, before being replaced by the rounded guards who have remained through current generations. The lot here offered is a remarkable specimen of this last generation. The three-body tonneau case with screw-down back and crown and graduated bidirectional revolving black bezel for the dpression times are still preserved in very nice conditions. This example features the much sought-after “four-line” dial with depth rating, the wording “SUBMARINER” “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” are split across four lines of text.
