Earthenware, lead glazeChina, Tang period (618-907 AD)Dimensions: Height 44 cm by 12 cm by 9 cmWeight: 1,320 gramsThe tri-coloured figure of a civil official is made of white earthenware and decorated with transparent glazes in ochre, green and straw-white colours. The man is dressed in a knee-length brown robe with long sleeves and a white belt. The borders of the sleeves which are hanging down to his knees and the crossed collar are patterned with uneven spots in three colours. Under the robe, the man is wearing a white garment reaching to the ground and covering his turned-up shoes. He has his hands clasped in front of the chest and covered by a white muff. On his head he has a high cap. The face with big round eyes below bushy brows portrays a dignified character. The left half side of the face is covered with a layer of yellow glaze. The back of the head and the cap as well as the bottom part of the figure are encrusted with earth. This type of figure is a known stereotype among the tomb figures of the Tang period (for an example that dates to the mid-eighth century and was formerly kept in the C.C. Wang Collection, see Ezekiell Schloss, Ming-ch’i: Clay Figures Reflecting Life in Ancient China, Katonah, New York, 1975, no. 79). Tri-coloured glazed ware from the Tang period is called ‘Tang sancai’ (three colours of Tang).
