JadeChinaDimensions: Height 25 cm by 15 cm by 15 cmWeight: 3.7 kilogramsAn unsually shaped vessel carved from mottled zoisite feldspar jade. The rectangular-section vessel is supported by four round feet which continue towards the body of the vessel, forming four flanged corners. The body is rising from a flat bottom to a waisted neck and slightly everted mouth. The four sides are decorated with low relief ornaments of a mythical creature, similar to a taotie, bordered by two rows of an archaic thunder pattern. The neck is decorated with banana leaves on two opposite main sides and cicadas on the other two sides. The cover has low reliefs of mythical animals on four sides. The body, the neck and the cover are provided with twelve movable rings, held by sculptured animals of stylized shapes. The cover has a trapezoidal knob. The vessel reminds of two different types of square-shaped ritual bronze vessels and creates a mixed version of them, with the round legs of a ‘fang ding’ and the body of a ‘fang yi’. Fang ding were used for food in the early Shang period in the second century BC, while fang yi used as wine containers dated from the late Shang and early Western Zhou period. Under the rule of the Qing emperor Qianlong (1736-1795 AD), models of fang yi and fang ding were carved from jade (for a fang yi see Stanley Charles Nott, Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, London 1962, colour plate XLIII).
