A large Chinese red lacquer chest dating from the 18th century. The lid features a black Shou medallion design within a tracery quatrefoil surrounded by ruyi clouds and the eight Buddhist emblems. The front and sides of the chest feature similar designs of ruyi clouds with bats and the eight Buddhist emblems done in gold-colored and black decoration. The back of the chest is decorated with lotus quatrefoil decoration. Two pairs of metal handles hang from either side of the chest, while the front has a large metal latch. Dimensions are: 23 inches tall X 35 1/2 inches long X 25 inches wide, 58.4 cm X 90.2 cm X 63.5 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is warping and separation of the seams. Areas of overpainting and breakage are present throughout. Severe water damage, wear to the surface, and staining is present, as well as bubbling and loss to the surface.
