A possibly Chilean painted four-panel folding screen, First half 19th century, Painted on stretched and supported canvas, showing a view of a city port, possibly that of the Chilean city of Valparaiso. Three ships are depicted, and a company of men and women is shown in the foreground. The leftmost ship and the stone gate to the right are flying a blue-white-red horizontally striped flag, which appears to be the Chilean Flag of the Transition (Bandera de la Transición), used only for five months in 1817 and 1818. This flag was adopted at the start of the period called the Patria Nueva (New Fatherland) after the defeat of the Spanish forces. The flag also resembles the flag of the Patria Vieja (Old Fatherland, 1810–1814), the first national flag of Chile, which featured blue, white and yellow stripes. The lower section of the folding screen features four cartouches, framed by foliate scrolls and horns of plenty. The outer two panels show fighting 16th-century colonial and indigenous groups, while the inner panels show water birds and hunting dogs. Stylised flowers painted in red and yellow are painted on the reverse. H 70 cm, W 200 cm,
