按佛教仪规，菩萨是无漏的圣人，是无所谓性别的，但是事实上无论是佛经还是佛教艺术上，总喜欢让菩萨随顺世间，带上世俗的性别。观世音菩萨有三十二种应化身，可依问道之人的身份不同而化现男身、女身、帝王身、婆罗门身，甚至可变化为樵夫牧竖等身形为之说法。自唐代以后就较少见到男相菩萨，观音造像多为俊美女性形象，留有虬髯的男性形象极为少见。此尊铜造像即为留有虬髯的男相观音，头戴发箍，大耳垂肩，面相饱满，双目细长，直鼻薄唇，表情静穆和悦，睿智而深沉。
