PAN YULIANG (1895-1977) China, dated 1964 38,5 x 26,5 cm (73 x 39 cm R.) Female Act. Ink on paper, framed under glass. Signature by the artist: „Yuliang 64“. One seal by the artist: „Liang”. German private collection, assembled prior to 2007 Pan Yuliang, original names Chen Xiuqing and Zhang Yuliang, was a native of Yangzhou in Jiangsu province. After her parents had died, she was sold into a brothel by her uncle, where she was rescued by an official, Pan Zhanhua, whose surname she took and who arranged for her to study painting in the Shanghai Fine Arts School under Liu Haisu. From 1921 to 1928 she studied Western Art in Lyon, Paris and Rome. From 1928 to 1935 she taught at the National Central University in Nanjing under Xu Beihong, becoming well known in Shanghai art circles. But her modernist works caused controversy and drew severe Criticism in China during the 1930s. From 1937 she settled permanently in Paris. She taught at the École des Beaux Arts, had exhibits internationally in Europe, the United States and Japan. After her death much of her work was transported to China, collected by the National Art Museum in Peking, the larger part collected by the Anhui Museum in Hefei.
