Zhang Shuqi (1900-1957) China, dated 1949 77,8 x 37,2 cm Loquats, hanging Scroll, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: „For Mister and Lady Qisen, painted in the third month of the jichou-year (1949), two days before I went to America again, Zhang Shuqi.“ One seal by the artist: „Shuqi“. One collector’s seal: „Bote“ (Poetter). On the back at the title strip another collector's seal "Bote" and collection no. "31". Old Berlin private collection, former collection Helmut Poetter Frankfurt - Zhang Shuqi was a native of Pujiang in Zhejiang province. He studied painting under Liu Haisu (1896-1994) at the Shanghai Fine Arts Academy and later taught at the National Central University in Nanjing. In 1937 he moved with the university to Chongqing. From 1942 he went to the United States, returning to China in 1946. He again went to America in 1949 where he finally settled and died in California. He is particularly known for his vivid paintings of birds and flowers in both styles, the detailed colored style and, as in this painting, the expressive ink style.
