This is evident in the superb composition, openwork carving, individual detailing of each figure and the realistic rendering of the clouds and rocky outcrop. The depiction of four Immortals, including Shide and Hanshan known as the Hehe Erxian, together with Liu Hai and Li Tieguai can also be found in a Ming dynasty painting by Shang Xi (active 15th century), in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Tracing the Che School in Chinese Painting, Taipei, 2008, pp171-172. The integration of vase and cover in the three-dimensional carving can be seen on several jade carvings in the Qing Court Collection; for two such examples see a yellow jade carving of two vases and three rams, Qianlong seal mark and period; and a spinach-green jade carving of dragon and phoenix and a vase, Qing dynasty, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 10 Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2010, nos.30 and 44. See also a related white jade carving of a raft and Immortals, Qianlong, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 May 2018, lot 36.
