This medium-sized figure was presumably designed for a chapel or for private devotion and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Laurence. He is shown dressed in a perizonium and laid out on a griddle with coloured flames rising up through its bars. This finely sculpted Mannerist work was recently convincingly attributed to the circle of Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), who was active in Florence, Rome, and Naples. Certificate Alfredo Bellandi, Florence 24.01.2018. Dimensions 21 x 41 x 14.5 cm. Artist or Maker Pietro Bernini, circle of Medium Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With remnants of older partial polychromy.
