Description

(without frame) In this curved panel, the body of Christ is shown in the foreground held by Saint John whilst Mary Magdalene washes the hands of the dead Saviour. The centre of the composition is dominated by the Virgin crying and praying in sorrow. Golgatha and Jerusalem can be seen before rolling hills in the background. The composition and style of the figures are heavily influenced by the works of Willem Key, which becomes clear through comparison with his "Lamentation of Christ" formerly preserved in the Rhenish town of Unkel. Dimensions 121 x 84 cm Artist or Maker Netherlandish School circa 1530/1540 Medium Oil on panel Literature For the works of Willem Key, see Max J. Friedländer: Die Altniederländische Malerei. vol. 13. Anthonis Mor und seine Zeitgenossen, Leiden 1936, p. 165, nr. 268, pl. 50.
