僧帽壶的器型在宋元时期的龙泉窑、景德镇窑瓷器中已有出现，明洪武、永乐年间，也曾烧造过青花以及釉裹红僧帽壶瓷器。紫砂僧帽茶壶始做于明代金沙寺，后经时大彬等人传承。但到了清代相继失传，这就是当下很难见到一把清代像样的僧帽壶的原因。
