The apron under the waist called suoyao, the contracted part of a piece of Chinese furniture, supporting the table top is carved with scrolling ruyi and auspicious pattern. The four legs are straight legs on hoofed foot. The generous curve of the horse-hoof feet give the table weight. This Chinese table gives the impression of luxury, strong, magnificent, charming and antique. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages.
