A Chinese stone carving of a guardian lion dating from the Tang dynasty. The lion has its right foot on a ball, indicating that it is a male lion. Dimensions are: 5 3/4 inches tall X 4 inches wide, 14.6 cm X 10.2 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is age appropriate wear. Provenance: Comes with a sticker from Nadeau's Auction Gallery's June 2, 2018 sale (1164), where it was sold as lot 411. It previously belonged to the estate of Peggy and David Rockefeller. Similar examples can be found in the collections of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery under accession number S2012.9.4313 and the Freer Gallery of Art under accession number F1913.138.
