STAFFORDSHIRE AMERICAN HISTORICAL / FRATERNAL ORDER TRANSFER-PRINTED CERAMIC CHILDREN'S MUG, having light blue transfer featuring images including a cornucopia, a beehive, and an eagle grasping a shield and banner featuring "FRIENDSHIP / LOVE / AND TRUTH", with "Entered According to Act of Congress by William J Pine: Grd Secty 1845" at bottom. Printed mark "Clark Levering & Co. / IMPORTERS / BALTIMORE" to underside. Circa 1845. 2 3/8" H, 2 1/2" D rim. Having rim hairline, otherwise undamaged. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ. Catalogue Note: "Friendship Love and Truth" is the motto for the fraternal order known as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland, the organization became the first fraternity in the United States to welcome both men and women. Notable members included William Jennings Bryan, Charlie Chaplin, Ulysses S. Grant, and Wyatt Earp. The fraternal order is still active today.
