BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, top with five and one-fourth rows of Biblical verse including an excerpt from Isaiah chapter 55 verses 6-7, below featuring various pictorial motifs of two women with a dog standing under a tree that a cat is climbing, flanked by a large parrot perched on a branch, two other birds, and foliage, underneath signed "Mary Rigby s Work 1852", all encompassed by a scrolling flowering-vine border. Housed under glass in a period grain-painted frame. Dated 1852. 16 1/4" x 14 1/2" sight, 21 1/2" x 19 1/2" OA. Good to very good overall condition with some toning, some bleeding of dark color thread onto linen, a hole near the top left-hand corner, light fading and fugitive color to some thread, frame with heavy wear, scratches, marks, and chips.
